National Hook-Up of Black Women: Championing Youth Literacy and Scholarships in Joliet
The Joliet Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women (NHBW) has spent decades investing in the academic success and health of local families. Through Reading Rooms, book giveaways, youth performing arts, and annual collegiate scholarships, the volunteer organization enriches community life.
For more than three decades, the Joliet Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women has championed educational equity and civic wellness. Operating from their historic center on Collins Street, NHBW members establish community reading rooms, host literacy circles, and distribute thousands of free books to children so every young reader can build a home library.
The chapter also conducts comprehensive community health fairs, youth mentoring, and the Male Performing Arts program, giving young men creative outlets in music and dance. Every spring, NHBW awards competitive college scholarships to graduating Joliet high school seniors, providing financial encouragement for higher education.
