Thinking about
running for office?
A short, nonpartisan overview of how people get on the ballot in Joliet, and where to start.
The process, step by step
- 1. Pick the office.
Mayor, a City Council district, Joliet Township, the Will County Board and more. See who represents Joliet today.
- 2. Check eligibility and deadlines.
The City Clerk handles city offices; the Will County Clerk handles county and township offices. Each office has residency, age and filing-window rules.
- 3. Gather your paperwork.
Typically nominating petitions with valid signatures, a statement of candidacy, and a statement of economic interests. If you raise or spend money, you may need a campaign committee registered with the Illinois State Board of Elections.
- 4. File on time and get on the ballot.
Submit everything to the right office during the filing period. Petitions can be challenged, so collect extra signatures and keep copies.
- 5. Reach voters.
Share your plans with residents. Candidates may add an optional Joliet Votes candidate profile, a paid listing that is not an endorsement.
